Next week we will be releasing the Alpha 17 update for Fractured Space.
This update has been a long time coming and includes two major improvements to the game: upgrading the game to Unreal Engine 4.11, and a complete overhaul of the way in which players acquire new ships.
The move to Unreal Engine 4.11 might sound a little dull in concept but it includes over 2,000 bug fixes and improvements which will result in the game performing better and being more stable for many players. You may not notice 2,000 individual changes to the game but the overall improvement will almost certainly be noticeable.
The more immediate change you will come into contact with is the retirement of the Shipyard Tech Tree. The old system for gaining a new ship is being scrapped in favour of a brand new system that does away with manufacturer XP and allows players to acquire the ships they want in the order they want them. This is in part to reduce the amount of time players feel they need to invest in the game in order to get the ships they want and equally to more clearly demonstrate our commitment to all ships being of equal value in combat. Full details of how this new system will work is available here.
Since we are changing the Shipyard Tech Tree significantly there is a knock-on effect to players that will involve compensation being delivered. As always, our goal here is to ensure that no player feels as though they have lost out in the transition between systems. Everything you need to know about how this compensation is being worked out can be found in the article linked above.
Extended Maintenance Period
Due to the complexity in compensating every player appropriately this update will require a significantly longer maintenance period than usual. At present we estimate that the game will be unavailable from early on Tuesday 12th July for a minimum period of 48 hours. During this extended downtime we will provide regular progress news through Twitch.tv, Twitter and Steam as well as the full patch notes for this update.
